WINNING POEMS - AGE 20 & OVER CATEGORY

Poet of Distinction: Amanda Mootie

Judgment Day

I gave you life, a wonderful gift!
You took it for granted, and began to drift
I presented obstacles, to get your attention
Because, you just kept going, in the wrong direction

A unique purpose, I gave to all creation
Not necessarily expecting, ideal perfection
But I did expect, that you’d make the time
To spend with me, as I gave you mine
I kept on waiting, everyday
For you to return, but you grew farther away

I sent my people, to bring you near!
But instead of listening, you turned a deaf ear
I presented opportunities, for you to discover
‘The preparations for my world’, before your last hour

I came to you, as a shameful betrayer!
Who had hurt you once, then asked to start over
You looked at me, with rage and anger
Disregarded my plea, and made me a stranger
“How many times, did you disobey ME?
Then turn around, and ask for mercy!”

I came to you, when you had all your money!
As a poor man asking, for food for his tummy
You turned me down, and left me there
You could have helped, but you didn’t seem to care

I came to you, as a devoted wife
Whose only desire, was to live an honorable life
But you could not help it, your eyes were thirst
For shameless affairs, that to you came first
When I found out, and confronted you with
You raised your voice, and started to hit

I came to you, as a blessing within
Even though I was brought-about, through foundation of sin
I was to be, your beautiful daughter
But you ended my life, so you could live better

I came to you, as the people of your country
To shelter and protect, and to build an economy
But instead you stole, and turned a blind eye
To the turmoil and tribulation, of the nation’s cry

I came to you, in so many ways
I’ve never forsaken you; I was there all of your days
When you were weak, I’ve been your strength!
To keep you sturdy, I went all lengths
Through every decision, and tear that you cried
I was right there, waiting to be your guide

Now you stand, before me here today
As I unravel before you, your life, ‘your way’
Now seeing it through, my eyes, you say,
“I’m sorry Dear Lord, for going astray”

In tears and sadness, I regret to say
It’s now too late, to reclaim your ‘delay’
A life filled with chances, day after day
But you took them granted, and just threw them away
I tried so hard, to pull you near
I spoke to you, you just didn’t hear
You were so caught up, nurturing worthless possessions
That has no value, in your final destination

I say to you, those blessed on earth
Don't wait to discover, that your success has no worth
The treasures you store, should be kept in your heart
Not as worldly possessions, you would soon have to part

Don’t waste your time dwelling over yesterday, ‘it’s history!’
Nor on tomorrow's complications, that is still to you a mystery
Be thankful for today, as it is a special gift,
Which is why it's called the present, live it wisely and do not drift!

The Dream

One night I had a dream
And this is what I saw
Millions were dying of starvation
While the world their leader’s tour

Children were turned into slaves
By their own flesh and blood
Forced to dig for riches
That lay deep beneath the mud

Young women were selling their bodies
For a moment of glamour and fame
Eternally causing to their family
Feelings of anger and shame

A religion was totally hated
For things not all had done
The actions of some extremist
Caused pain for everyone

Global warming was a major threat
Because countries continued to ignore
The fact that Co2 would bring to them
Effects more destructive than atomic war

Earthquakes rocked entire nations
As oil spills polluted the seas
Floods took many lives
Terror rained onto humanity

But then my eyes slowly opened
And I began to see
That my dream was not a dream
Just flashes of reality.

“God’s Goodness”

I’m lying in bed, it’s a quarter past three
Thinking of how good God’s been to me
He provided a home, such a comfortable life
A gorgeous guy that will make me his wife.
I get out of bed with a smile on my face
Completing my chores with meekness and grace
I’m fearless and sturdy, yet humble and pure
Seeking His guidance when I am unsure.
Now dawn has unfolded such a bright sunny day
The warmth of the wind blows my troubles away
The chirping of birds, what a sweet melody
In so many ways, God’s been so good to me.
I know I can trust him; he makes a great friend
For love and support, on Him I depend
To guide and protect and show me the way
Or just cheer me up and brighten my day.
My faith was renewed, my blessings abound
A true friend and Saviour, in my God I found
Words can’t convey the love deep in my heart
And from that old rugged cross, shall I never depart.
